Britain’s Energy System

7-day rolling settlement data for generation and interconnector flows. Values are lagged and not real-time.

Fuel Mix Disclosure

Supplier-declared Fuel Mix Disclosure (contractual/accounting, not physical electrons). Values shown for 2025 vs 2024. Missing values are shown as “–”.

To get the most from this data, users are recommended to read our explainer page here

Quick explainer

Fuel Mix Disclosure (FMD) is an annual, regulated statement suppliers publish showing the attributed fuel mix of the electricity they sell. It’s an accounting disclosure and does not describe the physical flow of electricity on the grid.

Energy Transition Notes

Plug-in Solar Panels Set for UK Supermarkets

The UK Government has announced plans to bring “plug-in” solar panels to high street retailers and supermarkets within months, marking a significant shift toward more accessible household renewables. Unlike traditional rooftop systems, these low-cost panels can be installed without professional fitting and plugged directly into a standard socket, allowing households to generate and use their own electricity with minimal upfront cost. The initiative is being developed in collaboration with major retailers and manufacturers, with the aim of reducing energy bills and accelerating adoption of small-scale solar across the country. Widely used in parts of Europe, plug-in solar could open the market to renters and households previously excluded from rooftop installations. While individual systems are modest in scale, the cumulative impact could be meaningful in reducing grid demand and increasing public engagement in the energy transition. More detail is available from the UK Government announcement and market coverage from Renewables Now.

Turning “Wasted Wind” into Cheaper Electricity for Consumers

The UK is moving to address one of the most visible inefficiencies in its power system: paying wind farms to switch off during periods of excess generation. Due to grid constraints, particularly in Scotland and parts of eastern England, turbines are frequently curtailed when transmission capacity cannot accommodate available output — a process that has historically required compensation payments funded by consumers. A new government-backed trial aims to flip this dynamic by enabling suppliers to offer discounted electricity to households and businesses during these high-wind periods, effectively passing through the value of otherwise unused renewable energy. The scheme is expected to launch ahead of winter and could play an important role in improving system flexibility while lowering bills in constrained regions. Over time, this approach may complement grid upgrades and storage deployment by better aligning demand with renewable supply. Further information is available from the UK Government policy release and industry reaction from RenewableUK.
